Union Cabinet Approves Major Infrastructure Projects to Boost Transport Networks
The Union Cabinet sanctioned ₹13,041 crore for five major rail and road projects to decongest key freight corridors and strengthen border connectivity.

The Union Cabinet has approved a massive series of infrastructure investments totaling over ₹13,000 crore to expand Indian rail and road networks. A significant share of these funds, roughly ₹9,450 crore, has been earmarked for four major railway multitracking projects aimed at boosting capacity, decongesting busy freight corridors, and expanding passenger connectivity. The multi-tracking initiatives span across West Bengal, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh to strengthen regional logistics. Officials noted that expanding these key transport corridors will directly lower transit costs and support broader economic growth. Major Expansion for National Logistics Infrastructure
In a significant push to modernize India's foundational logistics and mobility networks, the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved a suite of major infrastructure projects with a total outlay of ₹13,041 crore. The newly cleared package includes four extensive railway multitracking initiatives alongside a key national highway expansion, designed to eliminate logistical bottlenecks across multiple commercial hubs. Spanning critical industrial and agricultural corridors across West Bengal, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Bihar, these projects are estimated to generate millions of human-days of employment during construction while permanently upgrading regional mobility. A major share of the funding focuses on quadrupling the high-density Howrah-Chennai trunk line, which serves as a vital arterial route for both long-distance passenger travel and industrial freight movement between eastern and southern India. By expanding track capacity along high-demand sections like Kharagpur-Bhadrak and Gummidipundi-Gudur, the initiative ensures faster train speeds, higher frequency, and reduced transit delays across coastal corridors.
Enhancing Rail and Cross-Border Road Networks
The four approved railway projects, valued at ₹9,450 crore, will add approximately 410 kilometers of new lines to the Indian Railways network by 2030-31, boosting annual freight capacity by over 70 million tonnes. Key routes like the Cuttack-Paradeep line will see third and fourth lines added to efficiently connect steel manufacturing hubs and industrial zones directly with major deep-water ports. Alongside rail expansion, the Cabinet sanctioned ₹3,591 crore for the four-laning of the 82.6-kilometer Muzaffarpur-Sitamarhi-Sonbarsa section of National Highway 22 in Bihar under the Hybrid Annuity Mode. Serving as a crucial international trade corridor, this upgraded highway will drastically improve cross-border cargo movement to the India-Nepal border at Sonbarsa while relieving severe congestion in surrounding urban clusters.
Long-Term Economic and Environmental Impact
Beyond improving regional accessibility, the multi-modal transport push delivers substantial macro-economic and environmental benefits. Transitioning heavy cargo from road haulage to expanded rail lines will lower overall logistics costs for businesses while significantly cutting national fuel consumption. Estimates indicate that the rail projects alone will reduce crude oil imports by approximately 13 crore liters and lower carbon dioxide emissions by hundreds of millions of kilograms annually. Furthermore, enhanced connectivity to major ports, agricultural supply chains, and cultural circuits will invigorate local economies and support millions of residents across nearly 6,400 rural villages. As construction tenders roll out, this unified infrastructure drive underscores the government’s commitment to building a seamless, sustainable national supply network under the PM Gati Shakti framework.
