Cloudflare Launches Native Agent Identity Handles and Programmable Stablecoin Wallets
Cloudflare launched native agent identity handles and programmable stablecoin wallets, enabling AI agents to pay for web APIs and services autonomously.

Web infrastructure provider Cloudflare has introduced autonomous agent identity handles alongside integrated HTTP-based programmable stablecoin wallets designed for AI software agents. As digital agents increasingly navigate the web to perform tasks independently, this technical framework gives AI software verified identities and secure, micro-transactional financial capabilities. The tool allows autonomous programs to independently pay for API usage, access paywalled data, and buy computing services directly from other web applications without needing human intervention. Building Infrastructure for the Agentic Web
Addressing the rapid transition toward an agent-driven web, Cloudflare has officially launched Cloudflare Wallets, introducing a native identity and payment architecture designed specifically for artificial intelligence agents. Operating as a reverse proxy for roughly twenty percent of global web traffic, Cloudflare is positioning itself to solve a core challenge in autonomous computing: enabling software agents to identify themselves and execute transactions without human intervention. Under the new framework, account holders can claim human-readable identity handles—formatted as cloudflare.pay—which cryptographically map back to verified Cloudflare accounts. By pairing verifiable agent identities with programmable stablecoin balances, the system allows autonomous software tools to navigate, evaluate, and purchase paid web resources headlessly across the internet.
Programmable Wallets and Safety Guardrails
The payment architecture operates using a two-tiered system split between human owners and AI agents. Human operators manage primary "Account Wallets" to hold stablecoin balances, set top-level budgets, and delegate spending policies. In turn, agents utilize secondary "Virtual Wallets" driven via API keys to complete transactions. To protect organizations against accidental overspending or malicious exploitation, Virtual Wallets enforce strict programmable guardrails, including maximum per-transaction caps, daily or weekly allowances, and merchant allowlists. If an agent encounters a payment exceeding its designated limit, it can issue a manual override request to a human administrator for single-click approval. This delegated model provides agents with the autonomy to evaluate competing web services while guaranteeing firm corporate financial controls.
Reviving HTTP 402 for Instant Micropayments
To execute payments on an API level without forcing agents through traditional account sign-ups or credit card checkouts, Cloudflare utilizes the open x402 protocol. The standard revives the long-dormant "HTTP 402 Payment Required" status code. When an AI agent requests access to a monetized database, API, or article, the origin server returns a 402 challenge stating the resource price. The agent’s Virtual Wallet automatically verifies the request against its policy, attaches cryptographic proof of a stablecoin micropayment, and resubmits the request in under a second—completing the transaction within a single HTTP exchange. Paired with Cloudflare’s Monetization Gateway, this buyer-side wallet infrastructure establishes a functional, machine-native marketplace that turns automated bot traffic into monetizable web transactions.
